Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway
Jump aboard the steam train at Haverthwaite Station. Enjoy views from your carriage up to Lakeside and the southern tip of Lake Windermere. Ride the train to other Lakeside attractions like the Lakes Aquarium!
Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway’s history
Originally built in 1847 to carry coal and iron ore to the rest of the North West to power the Industrial Revolution, the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway first began carrying holiday-makers around the turn of the 20th Century before the service was suspended over the Second World War never to restart. The line remained open for freight until finally closing in 1967. However, railway enthusiasts began campaigning almost immediately to preserve the line. After many setbacks, the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway was reopened in May 1973 and has been carrying visitors ever since!
The Lakeside and Haverthwaite ride is around 20 minutes each way, and a 50-minute round trip gives you enough time to enjoy new parts of the Lake District. The views are absolutely stunning and there are several attractions along the route – not to mention a lovely tea room which serves delicious meals (and cakes) from 9 am to 3 pm. Feel free to bring your furry friends along to the station! Dogs are welcome to ride the train at no additional cost, but please remember that they can’t sit on the seats. We definitely recommend making this one of your stops during your visit! The station is around 40 minutes away from Skelwith Fold, making this the perfect one-day trip destination.
