Visiting the Lake District during Winter is a great idea if you want to avoid the crowds. However, you may have to be ready for a back up plan of indoor activities if it rains or snows. To help you come up with ideas for rainy days, or when you simply want to have a relaxing day, we have put together our favourite indoor activities in the Lake District.
Dive into the underwater at the Lakes Aquarium
The Lakes Aquarium is located in the village of Lakeside, only half an hour away from Skelwith Fold.
The Aquarium is a fun way to spend a rainy day indoor with kids. You can admire many animals, from frogs and crabs to sharks, otters and more. What makes this aquarium unique is the interactive fish tanks, where you can observe different species in plenty of details. The staff are incredibly friendly and ready to answer any questions you may have.

Spend a day shopping in Coniston
The picturesque village of Coniston offers beautiful views of Coniston Water, as well as many shops.
The village is quaint and small, meaning you will probably won’t find yourself in huge crowds and you can spend as much time as you want browsing around.
The shops vary from outdoor gears to gift shops, making shopping in Coniston a great indoor activity in the Lake District. If all the shopping makes you hungry, there are plenty of cafes and restaurants to sit down and relax.
Lakeland Motor Museum
With over 30,000 cars exhibit on display, The Lakeland Motor Museum is a must visit for anyone interesting in the automative industry. As you walk around the various rooms, you’ll have the opportunity to see a wide range of cars and motorbikes up close, including interesting replicas, including the 1935 Blue Bird car, 1939 Blue Bird Boat K4 and 1967 jet hydroplane Bluebird K7.
The Lakeland Museum is only 30 minutes away from Skelwith Fold and is located in the village of Backbarrow. Skelwith Fold Advantage Members receive a 10% discount on admission.
Brewery Arts in Kendal
Brewery Arts is an amazing venue for families that are keen on culture. The venue offers plenty of entertainment, including comedy shows, theatre, live music, films and more to suit everyone’s taste. The on site bar and restaurant is excellent if you want to dine out during your visit! Brewery Arts offers a range of discounts too, including family tickets and discounted cinema tickets.
The venue is located at 122a Highgate, Kendal, Cumbria, LA9 4HE, and it’s approximately 35 minutes away from Skelwith Fold.
Get active at Keswick Climbing Wall
Keswick Climbing Wall is part of the Outdoor Activity Centre, only 40 minutes away from Skelwith Fold and Ambleside. There is free parking on-site if you’re travelling by car.
This activity is perfect for outdoor lovers that are looking for some active fun on a rainy and cold day. Climbing indoors doesn’t mean you have to give up on a beautiful backdrop either: large double doors are open throughout to year for visitors to enjoy the scenery. Keswick Climbing Wall is open for all levels of experience, making this the perfect family friendly indoor activity.
