The Best Playgrounds in the Lake District

The Best Playgrounds in the Lake District

The Lake District has plenty of fun activities to do with your children, including spending the day at an amazing playground. Here are some of our top picks for the best playgrounds here in The Lakes.

The Lost Castle – Penrith

The Lost Castle is arguably one of the best playgrounds in the Lake District. Little ones can run wild as they enjoy the wooden castle built from sustainable timber. This giant structure can entertain kids for hours on end, but if this battlefront alone wasn’t enough for your little soldiers – just wait, there’s more! The Lost Castle also has a range of other fun features such as huge slides, ladders, trampolines, zip wires, swings and even a sandpit and smaller structures for younger children. There is also a small food hut which serves snacks, soups, sandwiches, and hot and cold drinks. The Lost Castle is located on the Lowther Castle and Gardens estate where there are plenty of activities to participate in as well.

Adventure Playground – Windermere

The Adventure Playground in Windermere is an excellent playground for your kids, or even teenagers, to blow off a bit of steam. This playground has a wide range of equipment to explore, including slides, climbing frames and nine brilliant towers to play on! There is something for every age group, ranging from a charming toddler area featuring a ‘Play Galleon Boat’ to a ‘Mountain Tower’ for teenagers.  Adventure Playground also has a seating area for picnics and for parents to have a brief rest. These benches are in a range of different locations around the park, including some covered by canopies so that you can enjoy the playground no matter the weather.

Fitz Park BMX Track and Playground

If you’re looking for a playground that’s a little bit different, then Fitz Park BMX Track and Playground might just be for you. This park in Keswick features a massive BMX track with numerous features which are fantastic for BMXers young and old. Go wild on the rollers, step-ups, berm corners, doubles, triples and more. Just a little walk away from the BMX arena is a fantastic playground which is fun for toddlers to teenagers. There are climbing structures, slides, swings and open spaces for ball games! The park has some excellent views over Skiddaw and Latrigg and has plenty of seating options in the park – making it the perfect spot for a picnic after playing in the sun.

Rookery Woods at Keswick Climbing Wall

The Newlands Adventure Centre has a brilliant adventure playground for children aged eight and under. This is an ideal location for families who have a mixed aged range. Older kids, teenagers, and adults can have a climbing wall experience in the centre, whilst younger children can play in Rookery Wood and won’t simultaneously miss out on any fun.

Adventure Play – Mirehouse

Adventure Play is made up of four fantastic woodland playgrounds, which are fully emersed in the trees and gorgeous wildlife that we have here in the Lake District. These woodland playgrounds include a ‘Forest Hazard Course’ which is great for twelve- to sixteen-year-olds! This playground is made up of a mini assault course!

The Steeplechase is another speed-based assault course, which parents are encouraged to participate in as well! The Steeplechase consists of solid barriers to either roll under or jump over depending on your height, bridges, jumps and more! Another ‘speed base playground’ is The Forest Castle. On The Forest Castle area, children can race each other to see if they can take control of the castle before their opponents – or mortal enemies! For younger children, Adventure Play has a great area called ‘Squirrel Island’, where they can let their imaginations run wild on the swing tires, or on the play horse and cart.

Please note that some of the parks mentioned in this list will need tickets to enter, so please refer to the info on each playground’s website to avoid disappointment.
