Castlerigg Stone Circle

Many of our guests choose to visit Castlerigg Stone Circle during a stay at Skelwith Fold. The stone circle dates back to the Neolithic period and is thought to be one of the first in Britain. The circle is made up of 38 stones, some of which are up to 3 metres tall.

Castlerigg Stone Circle occupies an idyllic position in Keswick and boasts far-reaching views in every direction. It is flanked by a ring of mountains, with Helvellyn and High Seat visible on a clear day. We highly recommend visiting early in the morning or at sunset to appreciate the peace and tranquillity of the surroundings. It’s a lovely spot to enjoy a quiet moment with your nearest and dearest.

Interestingly, the exact purpose of the stones remains a mystery, though some historians believe it may have served as a trading post. Others suggest that it was used as a place for social gatherings and religious ceremonies.

Castlerigg Stone Circle may also have links to astronomy with the stones aligned with the sun, moon and stars. The entrance is said to line up with the midwinter sunset.
