Coniston

If you would like to explore an area of outstanding natural beauty in the heart of the Lake District, as well as discover the fascinating history of a picturesque village, you might want to consider exploring Coniston. As well as being positioned in the south in the Lakes, it is only a 20-minute car journey from Skelwith Fold Caravan Park, making it an ideal spot to visit whilst on holiday. There are also plenty of things to do in the area, a few of which we have listed below.

Things to do in Coniston

Ruskin Museum

To get a real grasp of the history of Coniston, the best place to start off would be the Ruskin Museum, which traces the village’s roots, as well as the interesting events that have taken place there over the years. The museum is named after John Ruskin, who was a 19th-century art critic and poet, who spent the latter part of his life there. However, the museum also details the exploits of David Campbell, who used the Bluebird K7 (shown above) to break the world water speed record on six separate occasions on Coniston Water, before tragically being killed in a crash on the same waters in 1967.

Old Man of Coniston

Overlooking the village is an 800-metre-high fell known as the Old Man of Coniston, which makes for a particularly good, but rigorous walk. In the past, the fell itself has been used as a slate quarry, so you are likely to find the remains of the abandoned mines as well as other interesting features to explore whilst ascending to the summit.

Steam Yacht Gondola

For something slightly more leisurely, visitors to Coniston can take the Steam Yacht Gondola out onto the 5-mile stretch of water. The vessel itself was rebuilt using original components that were used when it was first launched in 1859, and it has now been active in the modern era since 1979. It is certainly the most uniquely Victorian way to explore Coniston, and no trip to the area is complete without it.

Coniston Boating Centre

If you would prefer to take control of your own vessel on Coniston Waters, you might want to visit Coniston Boating Centre. You can easily hire motor boats, rowing boats, canoes, paddle boards (shown above) and sailing dinghies, that can be taken onto the lake to enjoy the view in your own time.

Coniston Brewing Company

Of course, the final thing that needs to sampled in your exploration of this area, is the bitter. More specifically, Coniston Brewing Company has been creating award-winning beers for over 20 years. If you have been out on the waters all day, there’s nothing better than relaxing with a good pint in the Black Bull pub, that has a microbrewery attached to create both Bluebird Bitter and Old Man Ale.
