Dove Cottage

We highly recommend a visit to Dove Cottage if you have a keen interest in the arts and literature. The picturesque 18th century cottage was the home of renowned poet, William Wordsworth and the inspiration for many of his famous works.

You’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time the moment you walk through the door of this once loved family home. The talented team have re-created moments described in Wordsworths poems, letters and journals, with even the smallest of details brought to life.

The Garden Orchard & the Woodland

Wordsworth once referred to the garden as ‘the loveliest spot man hath ever found’ and it’s easy to see why. This rugged fell-side garden is the perfect setting to enjoy some peace and quiet. Take a moment to enjoy the scenery with your nearest and dearest, whilst imagining Wordsworth enjoying the space.

In the springtime, the garden is awash with wildflowers and there’s plenty of wildlife to discover. It’s sometimes possible to spot squirrels, butterflies, insects and birds, depending on the timing of your visit.

Museum

Wordsworth was a trailblazing poet, that pushed boundaries with an innovative writing style. The museum is an ode to his works, with an impressive selection or original manuscripts, journal entries and letters on display. The exhibits are very interactive, with plenty of opportunities to get ‘hands on’ with the printing press and ink writing.

At the end of your visit, head to the viewing station – you’ll be treated to magnificent scenery in every direction!

Cafe

If you’re feeling peckish, enjoy a bite to eat in the Cafe before heading back to Skelwith Fold. The friendly team cater for most dietary requirements and serve up a tasty selection of dishes, hot drinks and takeaway options.

You don’t need to visit Dove Cottage to make use of the cafe, making it the perfect pit stop if you’re tackling the Coffin route between Ambleside and Grasmere. Muddy boots, pushchairs and dogs welcome.
