Hill Top

No trip to the Lake District is complete without a trip to Hill Top if you’re a fan of Beatrix Potter. This idyllic cottage was brought with the proceeds of the Tale of Peter Rabbit and inspired many of her later works.

Today, the farmhouse is maintained by the National Trust who have worked hard to preserve it for generations to come. The cottage houses some of Beatrix’s favourite things, so you’ll get an insight into her life as you walk around the various rooms.

Cottage gardens

Once you finished walking around Hill Top cottage, take some time to explore the informal gardens. The groundskeeping team work hard to maintain the vegetable patch and colourful flower beds, which have been arranged in a traditional cottage-garden style.

If you’re familiar with Beatrix’s work you’ll recognise areas of the garden from her tales!

There’s also the opportunity to enjoy a farm tour with The Dixons, who have farmed Hill Top for more than 30 years. This unique activity gives an insight into faming in the The Lakes. Note the farm tour is only available on selected dates. It can be booked via the Hill Top visitor reception.

Cafe & shop

JOEY’s Cafe serves a tasty selection of sweet treats and savoury snacks if you’ve worked up an appetite during your visit. There’s also a second hand book nook and a gift shop selling a selection of souvenirs to commemorate your visit.
