Muncaster Castle

Muncaster Castle occupies an idyllic location in the Western Lake District fells. It’s the perfect day out from Skelwith, with plenty to keep the whole family entertained.

Dedicate the morning to touring the historic castle. It has been owned by the Pennington family for more than 800 years and boasts a treasure trove of opulent furniture, artworks and textiles from the various inhabitants during this time.

The tour is self-guided so you can take in the rooms at your leisure. There’s also an opportunity to learn more about the history of the castle during the daily Curator’s Chat.

Gardens

Next, head out into the garden to check out the impressive grounds. There are 77 acres of carefully manicured lawns, woodlands and themed areas to discover – with something different around every corner!

Muncaster is a year-round destination, but spring is our favourite time to visit. The gardens are awash with colour as the flowers come into bloom. Muncaster’s Bluebell Wood is one of the best places to see bluebells in the Lake District. Visit between mid April and the end of May to see them in all their glory, but please be respectful and stick to the paths!

Younger members of the family will love the fantastic outdoor play areas hidden among the grounds. The Yeti Adventure Quarry and Giant Swing are perfect for slightly older children. They will spend hours exploring the various rope ladders, net bridges and slides.

Hawk & Owl Centre

If you’re into wildlife, you have to visit the on-site Hawk & Owl Centre, where you can see owls, falcons, eagles and vultures up close. Marvel at these magnificent creatures as they glide in the skies above Muncaster Castle. Displays take place up to 3 times per day throughout the peak summer season and give an insight into the birds’ upkeep, training and care.

The Hawk & Owl Centre also offers unique owl handling experiences (for an additional fee) – the perfect treat for animal lovers young an old.

Weapons Hall

The Weapons Hall is the highlight of many people’s visit. See whether you have what it takes to become a Muncaster Knight with the ‘have a go’ activity sessions! In these sessions you can try your hand at axe throwing, archery and crossbows. Upgrade to an unlimited day pass or a masterclass for more goes!

Food & Drink

The Stables Cafe is well-worth a visit if you’re not in the mood for a picnic. The fantastic head chef cooks up a range of delicious castle-made dishes for all the family to enjoy. From light bites to afternoon teas and a traditional Sunday lunch, you won’t leave hungry!
