Lakeland Motor Museum

The Lakeland Motor Museum is a fascinating collection of over 30,000 cars, motorbikes and other automobilia showing the development of road transport over the twentieth century.

Lakeland Motor Museum’s Collections

The museum boasts over 30,000 exhibitions with a variety of collections. This includes displays on the history of motorcars, motorcycles and scooters, the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy and the Campbell Bluebird. This exhibition celebrates the achievements of Donald Campbell, such as breaking the world land and water speed record, and commemorates his death at Coniston Water. Notable highlights of the museum include full-sized replicas of the 1935 Blue Bird car, 1939 Blue Bird Boat K4 and 1967 jet hydroplane Bluebird K7.  Donald Campbell used this plane to attempt to break the 300mph barrier in the Lake District. This replica was also featured in the film Across the Lake, which explores the life of Donald Campbell. It also details the precise timekeeping methods that were used for the record attempts using racing chronograph watches.

Visitors can also admire another replica of the Blue Bird Boat K4 is now also in the nearby Ruskin Museum in Coniston.

Housed in a converted mill in the heart of the Lake District, this famous museum is just a few minutes from Lake Windermere. It is much more than just a motor museum: with plenty of local history and period shopping displays, authentic recreations and picturesque riverside cafes, it makes it a great day out for the whole family.
